The dog days of summer are upon Dearborn, Michigan. The hot days and cool evenings often create sudden, violent summer storms. A little planning can go a very long way toward keeping your family safe. A fully stocked and accessible Emergency Supply Kit will make any disaster a little easier. Keep in mind, depending on the severity of the storm, it may take days for help to arrive. The America Red Cross recommends stocking a 3-day supply of essentials.
Recommended Items to Include in an Emergency Supply Kit:
- Water, one gallon of water per person per day for drinking and sanitation
- Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food and can opener
- Battery-powered or hand crank NOAA Weather Radio with extra batteries
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- First aid kit
- Prescriptions, contact lens, glasses and hearing aids w extra batteries
- Copies of personal documents including medication lists, proof of address, deed/lease to home, passports, birth certificates and insurance policies
- Whistle to signal for help
- Dust masks to filter dirty air
- Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter in place
- Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
- Tool kit and work gloves
- Local maps
- Phone chargers with car adapters
- Extra car and house keys
- Matches
- Pet supplies
